If I could change my programme...


Resultado de imagen para universidad dibujoWell, I’m in my 4th year of the programme of psychology of the Universidad de Chile and I have some complaints. I think that I haven’t developed skills that I need for work properly. In this programme the only concern is to learn theories and content, and sometimes a critical thought.
So, I think that some changes are really necessary in this programme. In the first place, I think that is necessary organize practical activities since the first year and increase the option to intervene with the years of experience of the student. But it is important that these activities don’t correspond to a particular subject but to be transversal to the programme. This would allow the student to apply the things that have learn so far.  Also these activities will prepare the student for the field work because will allow him/her to develop some skills that are beyond the theories.

Also, I would eliminate some subjects that are really specifics for the firsts years, like “basic processes of learning (that sound really introductive, but actually I think that I never going to use the things that I learn there). In this respect, some of these subjects make the programme more difficult because the teachers expected you to memorize a lot of concepts and content and that give you -as student- more workload. I think currently is no need to memorize, because you can find anything that you don’t remember in the internet very quickly. So I think is more important to show the student the use they can give to this theories and concepts.
Last but not least is really important that the teachers dedicate time to plan ahead the classes and compromise with the subject that they are teaching, because you can really tell when some teacher doesn’t want to be there. Also, some teachers need some courses of pedagogy, because they know a lot of the topic that are teaching, but they don’t know how to teach it.

Choosing a postgraduate degree

I’m never sure of anything, but if I would have to choose to study anything else, it would be a master in clinical psychology. I think that would be really useful for my education and for my work, because I think that the undergraduate  program isn’t en ough. Also, I think that psychology is a broad field and it has so much topics and theories to learn about, it’s really interesting. Because of that, you need to keep learning all the time about it, so you can be a good professional. Beside the eagerness to study, I still don’t know which field of the clinical psychology I would like to study. For now, I only know that it would be related to adults instead of children, because I don’t understand kids and I don’t know how to interact with them. Another thing that I’m not sure is where I would like to study, and I think that depends on which field of the clinical psychology I choose. Social Media

The social media is really common way to communicate these days. Because of that, arranging a meeting with someone without your mobile phone is very weird. Anyone can realize that when it loses his/her phone or don’t have one. In the first place, everyone gets surprised when they find out about that and in second place the communication is more difficult, because all the other people can reach each other faster than you.  In this respect, I have got used to communicate by Whatsapp, even more than call someone on the phone, but sometimes is necessary because is faster. So I used a lot in my daily living, but I notice that can be really requesting. For example, in the university is a requirement to have an e-mail, and check it constantly to know what’s happening with some subjects and evaluations. My future job as a psychologist

It’s really difficult for me to picture myself in my job because I feel it so far from now. But, when I finish my career I would like to take a master’s program in clinic psychologist, because I have a good specialty and I think that the university doesn’t give you that whit the undergraduate program. When I finish my studies I want to work as a clinical psychologist in the public system, especially with adults (I don’t get along with children, but I’ try to stay open about my options). Because of that, I think that my job would be mainly in indoors spaces, but this idea doesn’t bother me. I would like to try different jobs, because is very difficult to know what kind of job do you like if you don’t try it.   Accordingly to this, first I would like to work in a psychosocial programme, maybe with a women’s group.
